The Board

The main object of the Health Professionals Act 2004 is to protect the public from the risk of harm from health professionals.  In accordance with the Act the role of the Medical Board is the registration of medical practitioners in the ACT, setting standards of practice and helping practitioners meet those standards.  In addition, the Board is to take action in relation to reports about medical practitioners.

Detailed Board functions under the Act are:

a.   administer a scheme of registration and to continuously review the standards of practice of registered medical practitioners;

b.       set fees for the administration of the Act by the Board;

c.       provide advice to the Minister, profession and the public about matters relevant to the medical profession;

d.       set standards of practice for the medical profession;

e.       take part in any entity responsible for the development of policies for the promotion and maintenance of standards of practice within the profession;

f.        approve educational and training courses related to medical qualifications;

g.       promote and monitor the continuing competence of registered medical practitioners and their professional development;

h.       deal with registered medical practitioners who contravene the required standard of practice or who do not satisfy the suitability to practice requirements;

i.        provide information to allow the laying of charges against people who commit offences against the Act;

j.        assist in the development of the required standard of practice;

k.       promote the required standard of practice;

l.        develop and promote best practice standards to which registered medical practitioners should aspire;

m.      develop supportive relationships with individuals or entities that have a shared interest in public protection and medical regulation; and

n.       provide information to confirm whether someone is registered medical practitioner.
