Notice of Increase in Fees – 10 July 2008

The ACT Medical Board has found it necessary to increase a number of its fees with effect 1 August 2008.

The Board found that the fee increase was necessary due to the increased cost of administering the Health Professionals Act 2004 particularly the heavy procedural requirements associated with its registration activities.  The Board is self-funded and as such sets out to ensure that any increase in fees occurs only when absolutely necessary.  To this end you may wish to note that the last fee increase occurred in July 2005.

A schedule of the current fees can be found here.

National Pathways to Registration for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

Please note that the development of the uniform national pathways to registration for International Medical Graduates (IMG) is presently under development in the ACT as part of a national agreement. The following information is provided by the Board to assist in planning. Please note that much of the detail is not settled and may be subject to change

The Board’s website will be updated as soon as further information is available.  Queries should be via letter or e-mail addressed to the Board.  Please do not telephone the Board at this stage.

By national agreement, all jurisdictions are introducing the following uniform assessment and registration pathways for International Medical Graduates in addition to the existing AMC examinations pathway:

Competent Authority pathway
Standard pathway
Specialist pathway

1.     Competent Authority Pathway

Implementation of the Competent Authority pathway in ACT is contingent on accreditation of the process of workplace assessment of registrants with Advanced Standing.  The Boards accreditation submission is currently under consideration by the AMC Interim Accreditation Committee.

Information regarding eligibility for registration under the CA pathway (including Advanced Standing) is available from the AMC website www.amc.org.au.  It is expected that this pathway will be available for eligible applicants in the near future.

2.     Standard Pathway

IMGs not eligible under the Competent Authority or Specialist pathways may be assessed and registered via the Standard pathway.  It is anticipated that from 1 July 2008, successful completion of the AMC Multiple Choice Exam or the AMC Screening MCQ Exam will be a prerequisite for new applications for registration via the Standard pathway.

Information regarding the AMC examination timetable and examination centres, including off-shore centres is available from the AMC website www.amc.org.au.

3.     Specialist Pathway

Registration of overseas trained specialists and genuine occupational trainees on the Specialist pathway will require College certification.  Most positions currently occupied by registrants in the postgraduate trainee category will not meet the criteria for the Specialist pathway and will be required to proceed down the Competent Authority or Standard pathways.

Postgraduate trainees also need to be assessed by the appropriate specialist college to ensure that the position description describes a genuine training position, that the IMG has already undertaken substantial training in their specialty and their learning requirements will be satisfied in the position. If cleared by the college, such postgraduate trainees will not be required to sit an AMC MCQ examination.
